About Dr. Steinman
Dr. Howard K. Steinman has provided expert witness services in Mohs surgery, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic dermatology since 2000. He has been retained in more than 65 cases, serving both plaintiffs and defendants, and has testified in eleven depositions and six trials.
In 2024, Dr. Steinman received the American Academy of Dermatology Presidential Citation in recognition of his dedication as an educator of excellence in Mohs surgery. That same year, the American Society for Mohs Surgery appointed him an Honorary Lifetime Fellow with Distinction.
Dr. Steinman is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. He graduated magna cum laude from Pomona College and earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his first two years of dermatology residency at the University of California, San Diego, followed by an appointment as Overseas Registrar at St. John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London—an honor offered annually to only one non-British resident. He then completed fellowship training in Mohs and dermatologic surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago under Dr. Barry Goldsmith, a founding member of the American College of Mohs Surgery. Thereafter, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
With over 40 years of clinical experience and more than 30,000 Mohs procedures performed. He has co-edited two textbooks, authored 13 textbook chapters, and published more than 55 scientific papers in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, British Medical Journal, British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery Journal, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology Venereology, and the Journal of Clinical Medicine.
A Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery, Dr. Steinman also co-founded and served as president of the American Society for Mohs Surgery (ASMS). He co-created and co-directed the ASMS annual Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery Course for 25 years.
Dedicated to teaching, Dr. Steinman has trained residents in Mohs surgery, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic dermatology as Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego; Associate Professor and Director of Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery at Texas A&M School of Medicine; and currently as Associate Professor of Surgery at Campbell University School of Medicine. He has lectured extensively at national dermatology meetings on surgical and cosmetic dermatology topics.
